Updates From Mr. Kemp - Wednesday, October 14th From Mr. Kemp - Wednesday, October 14th

Dear Earl Rowe Families,

We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and enjoyed some down time with your families :) We would like to send out some information about Halloween and Remembrance Day. We will be celebrating Halloween at school but it will look a bit different this year. Students can come to school on Oct 30th with their costumes and can wear them as per classroom instructions. There will be no parades or dances and we ask families not to send any food items for sharing. If you would like to send a Halloween treat for your child to eat during the celebratory time, that would be fine but not necessary.

We will be honouring Remembrance Day this year with voluntary classroom presentations through a zoom assembly. We will honour the 11th hour moment of remembering together as a school to remember our fallen soldiers. Thank you for sending in any pictures of serving family members to honour their legacy.

If your child is home unwell or in isolation and working from home on the google classroom, please make sure that they are contacting their teacher daily at around 9am (no later than 10:30) for attendance purposes and signing into their google classroom. We ask that they make contact through Remind, student school email or any other form of communication provided by your classroom teacher. They should be checking in daily to the google classroom to connect with the work for the week. Please discuss with your child to make sure they know how to access the Google Classroom from home. Each classroom teacher has worked with the students to get on the google classroom and for younger students, teachers will communicate with families to help support the connect should they be at home. If you are uncertain of how to support this connection, please contact your child's classroom teacher.

Please stay tuned for zoom interview sign up program coming to you at the end of October. Zoom Interviews will be scheduled the week of November 16th- 19th and will be booked through our electronic system like last year.

Thank you as always for all your support and for working as a team to keep Earl Rowe Safe and Learning!

Earl Rowe Staff

Updates From Mr. Kemp - Monday, September 28th From Mr. Kemp - Monday, September 28th
Dear Earl Rowe Families,

We hope that you had a great weekend with your families! Thank you so much for all your support as we transitioned through reorganization and got our At Home remote learning up and running. Reorganization was a success and all students have settled into their new classrooms and are already well into the learning.

Now that students are in their more permanent location, classroom teachers will be instructing them on the use of the Google classroom and will be posting weekly materials in case students are away for a prolonged period of time. For the younger students, teachers will be sending links to the classrooms so parents can help students access the classroom should they be at home for some time. The Google classrooms will be similar to what you used last year although there will only be information and activities to help support current learning while they are away. Some classrooms will be using the Google classroom as part of their daily practises which will make the transition at home very smooth. For Technnology Support for Family go to the following SCDSB site.
Technology Support for Families

This week on Wednesday, we will be honouring Orange Shirt Day and learning about reconciliation and First Nations history in Canada. We will be creating Orange shirts and feathers with messages that Every Child Matters! Please discuss the learning with your children this week.

We will also be learning about Rowan's Day on the 30th, which highlights the importance of the concussion protocols in place to keep students safe and injury free at school. Please share the importance of reporting head injuries to adults.

On Thursday October 1st we will Walk with Terry and support such a worthy fundraiser. This year you can donate on School Cash Online or at the Terry Fox foundation to support the cause. Our fundraising goal this year is for every student to donate an online Toonie for Terry.. Unfortunately this year, we will not be able to have parents help join us and celebrate the day. We will post some pictures on twitter after the event.

Unfortunately we will not be able to share in our Thanksgiving celebration or our Meet the Teacher Night at this time due to current gathering restrictions. We hope to be able to continue these traditions in the near future.

Please continue to follow the Health and Safety practises set up by the SMDHU to keep our students safe:

1) Covid screen every morning and if unwell or symptomatic, please keep children at home

and

2) If symptoms exist, please consult with family practitioner or get Covid negative test

and

3) Please do not send students back to school until 24hrs symptom free. Please call office, email or put note in agenda of results or doctor feedback

Thank you for working as a community to keep our schools open and safe for all students :)

Have a fantastic week!

Earl Rowe Staff

Orange Shirt Day - Wednesday, September 30th Shirt Day - Wednesday, September 30th

Orange Shirt Day is recognized on Sept. 30, 2020, as shared on the SCDSB Holy Days and Holidays Calendar. This day is a commitment to ongoing reconciliation in Canada and invites us to honour the stories of Residential School survivors and their communities. This date is considered important in the residential school experiences of First Nation, Métis and Inuit people, as it was the day that children would be removed from their homes to attend residential schools.

Terry Fox Run Fox Run
Dear Earl Rowe Families,

We wanted to pass on some information about our Terry Fox run this year. Even though the run will look different this year with cohort running, we will still celebrate the spirit of Terry Fox. We will miss having the parents join us this year but will hope that you are able to celebrate Terry Fox as a Family. Please see some of the information below:

Our run is Thursday, October 1st, 2020 at 2pm (Friday, October 2nd raindate). This year we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Terry's journey. Resources are available on from the Terry Fox Foundation ()

We will have a larger track set up on the field for the junior and intermediate classes (a map will follow shortly). Primary students are welcome to use the track. We can have classes on the track and the big yard at the same time. As there will be classes who are walking at different times of the day, we will not be playing music over the sound system.

This year the families are encouraged to make their donation a cashless one. This can be done through the Terry Fox Foundation directly () or through our own school at SchoolCash online. We are hoping that classes will set a challenge for themselves: e.g. 40 toonies donated on-line per class to celebrate.

Thank you as always for all your support with such an worthy community fundraiser. Please let us know if you have any questions:)

Earl Rowe Staff
